Translate OpenDocument files

Translate LibreOffice and OpenOffice ODT, ODP and ODS files and get the same format back, with styles, tables and layout in place. Example instructions included.

OpenDocument files from LibreOffice and OpenOffice are translated in their own format: text documents (.odt, up to 25 MB), presentations (.odp, up to 30 MB) and spreadsheets (.ods, up to 20 MB). An ODT comes back as an ODT, with no round trip through Word.

What is translated, and what is left alone

FileTranslatedLeft as it was
ODTParagraphs, headings, lists, tables, headers, footers, footnotesStyles, images, margins, tracked changes and comments
ODPSlide text, tables and speaker notesMasters, layouts, images and animations
ODSText cells in every sheetFormulas, numbers, number formats and sheet order

Bold, italics and links inside a sentence move with the right words.

What you can ask

A report, formal

For an ODT: sets the register and protects an official name.

Translate this document into French. Use a formal tone and keep the name of the agency, Office for Public Works, in English.

Slides and notes

For an ODP: translates the slides and the speaker notes.

Translate the slides and the speaker notes into German. Keep the wording short enough for slides.

One column of a spreadsheet

For an ODS: translates the column you name and writes over its cells.

Translate the description column on the Catalog sheet into French. Leave the sku column and the prices unchanged.

Every text cell

For an ODS: all text cells in all sheets, formulas and numbers left alone.

Translate the text cells of every sheet into Italian. Leave numbers, formulas and codes as they are.

Good to know

  • One target language per upload for all three types. If you ask for two, the plan translates one and says so. Run the file once per language: your glossary carries over.
  • ODS writes over the original cells. An ODS cannot gain a new column, so the translation replaces the text of the cells you scope. To keep the source beside the translation, or to translate into several languages in one job, use an Excel workbook instead.
  • Formulas stay. A formula is never a translation candidate and numbers stay numbers.
  • Output filter. Not available for OpenDocument: the whole file comes back.
  • Ceilings. 25 MB for ODT, 30 MB for ODP, 20 MB for ODS.

Use these docs with your AI tools

An AI agent can read this documentation directly. You do not need an account or an API key. Everything here is public and read-only.

Query these docs via MCP

Recommended

Add this server to Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Mistral, or any tool that supports MCP. Your agent can then search AI Glot Docs documentation and read it in full, instead of answering from memory.

https://ai-glot.com/docs/mcp
  • searchFind the passages that answer a question.
  • fetchRead one page in full, as Markdown.
  • list_pagesSee every page in this documentation.

Query these docs over HTTP

The same tools also work as plain web requests. Use this for scripts, or for any tool that does not support MCP. There is one endpoint per tool. Arguments go in the query string, and the answer comes back as JSON.

Read the OpenAPI description. It is built from the same definitions as the tools, so it always matches what the endpoints do.

Read these docs as Markdown

Add .md to any page URL to get its Markdown source. You can also send the headerAccept: text/markdown to the page URL itself.
