File formats

One guide per file format or family: what AI Glot translates, what it leaves alone, the size ceiling and example instructions you can copy and adapt.

AI Glot translates more than 35 file formats, and each one has its own rules. A Word document keeps its styles, a subtitle file keeps its timecodes, a gettext catalog keeps its plural forms. These guides explain what happens to your file, what to know before you upload it, and which instructions work well for it.

For the complete table of extensions and ceilings, see Files and formats. For the workflow itself, see Translate a file.

How instructions work

You describe what you want in plain language and AI Glot reads the file, then shows a plan: what it will translate, what it will leave alone and what it will cost. Nothing is charged until you approve. Two things apply to every format:

  • One target language per upload for most formats. Word, PowerPoint, OpenDocument (including spreadsheets), PDF, EPUB, InDesign, HTML, Markdown, plain text, subtitles, XLIFF, gettext, Android, iOS strings, Java properties, INI, Fluent, PHP, .NET, Qt and generic XML each hold one language. If you ask for two, the plan translates one and says so. Run the file once for each language: your glossary carries over.
  • Several languages in one job work for CSV, TSV, Excel, JSON, ARB, resjson, JSON Lines, TOML and Xcode String Catalogs. YAML takes several languages when the file already has a section for each one.

Not on the list?

Some formats are refused with a message that says what to send instead, such as .doc, .xls, .ppt, .indd, .mo or .mobi. They are listed in Files and formats. In the app, a refused format shows a Request this format button.

Use these docs with your AI tools

An AI agent can read this documentation directly. You do not need an account or an API key. Everything here is public and read-only.

Query these docs via MCP

Recommended

Add this server to Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Mistral, or any tool that supports MCP. Your agent can then search AI Glot Docs documentation and read it in full, instead of answering from memory.

https://ai-glot.com/docs/mcp
  • searchFind the passages that answer a question.
  • fetchRead one page in full, as Markdown.
  • list_pagesSee every page in this documentation.

Query these docs over HTTP

The same tools also work as plain web requests. Use this for scripts, or for any tool that does not support MCP. There is one endpoint per tool. Arguments go in the query string, and the answer comes back as JSON.

Read the OpenAPI description. It is built from the same definitions as the tools, so it always matches what the endpoints do.

Read these docs as Markdown

Add .md to any page URL to get its Markdown source. You can also send the headerAccept: text/markdown to the page URL itself.

To read the whole documentation in one file, open llms-full.txt. For a short index of every page, open llms.txt.
